In September, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the Indian Premier League, a Twenty20 competition, would start in 2008. In January 2008, the BCCI revealed the owners of eight city-based teams based in different cities. Reliance Industries LTD (RIL) bought Mumbai Indians teams for $111.9 Millions. During that auction, Mukesh Ambani acquired the rights to the team of Mumbai Indians for a period of 10 years.

The Indian Premier League stated the four players as icon players for their city-based teams, making the players very busy and unavailable to play for any team other than their city team. Sachin Tendulkar was the Icon player for the Mumbai Indian team.

The icon player also earned 15% more than the next-best-paid player in their team. At first player auctions for the initial IPL season established in February 2008, the Mumbai team got several star international cricketers such as Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, Lasith Malinga and Robin Uthappa.

The team based in Maharashtra named Sachin Tendulkar as the captain and bought former India cricketer Lalchand Rajput as the head coach. Unfortunately, Tendulkar was injured before the start of the 2008 season, which was the reason that Harbhajan Singh took responsibility as the captain in the initial stage of the season.

The team was in a bad condition and had a bad start in the season, losing their first four games. Their first match was a 5-wicket defeat against the RCB on 20 April 2008 at the Wankhede. Their stand-in captain, Harbhajan, got suspended because of his irrelevant behaviour as he slapped a decision during the match.

During that time, the match was against Kings XI Punjab. After Harbhajan’s suspension, Shaun Pollock took the captaincy until Sachin Tendulkar returned. In supervision of Pollock’s or his captaincy, Mumbai got victory for six out of their next six games, which forced them to win two more out of the rest of  four tournaments to qualify for the semi-finals.

Before winning their last league match, Mumbai suffered three last-over defeats in the next three games, including two off the last ball. They finished fifth in the points table with seven wins and seven losses, missing a semi-final spot by just one point.

During the 2010 players auction, Mumbai Indians bought or featured Trinidadian all-rounder Kieron Pollard for $750,000, which was the turning point for their team. After this auction, they featured ten newcomers Indian players. Out of 10, 7 were the ICL players. The ordinary cricketer of India Known for his average performance Robin Singh was the head coach of the team while Pollock got the role of bowling coach. Mumbai shifted their home match stadium to Brabourne Stadium for that season after that the Wankhede was undergoing some necessary changes.

Mumbai won 7 matches wonderfully out of eight to secure the top place in the points table. The success of the team was mainly because of the unforgettable efforts of Tendulkar, Malinga, Harbhajan, Ambati Rayudu, and Saurabh Tiwary. They got victory over three of the remaining six league games. They defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 35 runs in the semi-final, all credit goes to Pollard’s all-rounding efforts (33* from 13 balls and 3/17). In the final, they lost the match by the Chennai Super Kings by 22 runs. Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 618 runs at an average of 47.53 and has a strike rate of 132.6, got the prestige of having the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs in the season.
